A counter display has to fit a space a retailer has already allocated, hold a count the buyer has already agreed, and arrive packed so a store associate can place it without unpacking anything. Those three constraints come from the retailer rather than from the brand, and they define the display before any design work is useful. Brands that design first and then try to fit the footprint end up either reducing facings, which weakens the display, or exceeding the space, which gets it declined. The productive sequence is footprint, then count, then pack out, then design, and it is the reverse of how most display projects start.
The failure we see most is arithmetic rather than design. The display holds one count, the product ships in cases of another, and reconciling them costs handling labour at every delivery for the life of the promotion.

The strength calculation on a counter display is not the same as on a shipping case, because the load is concentrated and the display has to look presentable while carrying it rather than merely survive. Dense product changes this sharply. A display holding jerky, nuts or confectionery pieces carries considerably more weight per cubic inch than the same footprint holding chips, and a structure that works for one will bow visibly under the other. Handling matters as much as static load, since a packed display gets moved, stacked in transit and carried by a store associate who may hold it by an edge that was never designed to be load bearing. A counter display earns its cost where the purchase is impulsive and the product is small and high margin. That covers confectionery, cookies and crackers in single portions, popcorn and snack singles, meat snacks and jerky sticks, gum, mints, energy products and travel size items. It also earns its cost as secondary placement for a product that already has shelf space, since a second facing at the till reaches a customer who was not shopping the category. The mistake worth avoiding is treating the display as a marketing item separate from the packaging program, because the display, the shelf trays and the shipping case all have to agree on a count. Sourcing them together is the difference between a promotion that runs cleanly and one that generates handling problems at every store. It also means a repeat promotion is a reorder rather than a fresh project, because the counts and the structure are already proven.

The retailer’s footprint first, because everything is designed inside it. Then the unit count the buyer has agreed and how many units should face the customer. Because if it does not, someone opens cases and counts units by hand at every delivery. If a display holds twenty four units and the product ships in cases of twenty, then filling displays means splitting cases, leaving partial cases in a back room and generating handling labour and stock discrepancy at every store. It sounds minor and it recurs for the whole promotion. The fix is arithmetic and it costs nothing at the specification stage, which is why we settle it before either the display or the case is tooled.
No. Armour Rose purchases from manufacturing partners and sells to customers, and corrugated trays and PDQ displays are a substantial share of what we move. The particular value here is that we also source the product packaging going into the display, so the counts and dimensions reconcile. A display converter can only build to the count it is given, and by the time it is given that count the product cases have usually already been tooled to a different one.
The structure was almost certainly calculated from the footprint rather than the loaded weight. Product density varies enormously at the same volume, so a display sized for chips will visibly bow under nuts, jerky or confectionery pieces even though the footprint is identical. Handling compounds it, because a packed display is moved, stacked and carried in ways the design may not have accounted for. The fix is calculating flute, grade and internal structure from total loaded weight and the handling route, then verifying it on a packed sample rather than an empty one.
It depends on what the retailer expects and where the labour is cheapest. Shipping flat costs the least in freight and puts assembly and filling onto store staff, which many retailers will not accept. Fully packed and ready to place is what most buyers want, and it moves the labour to the pack out stage where it can be done efficiently, but it costs more in freight because you are shipping air and structure. Partly packed sits between. We quote the options with the labour visible so the comparison is real.
Corrugated is strong ground here. Recycled content is standard rather than exceptional in corrugated manufacture and FSC-certified board is readily available, with documentation a partner can generally provide. Litho lamination for high quality graphics adds a laminated layer that complicates the recycling story slightly, so where sustainability is a stated requirement, direct print on a display that does not need retail quality graphics is often the better answer.
