custom stand up pouches

The most requested format in food packaging and the easiest to specify badly. Custom stand up pouches have to stand up loaded, hold a seal under weight, and reclose more than twice.

A Bottom Gusset Is a Structural Decision

The gusset at the base of a stand up pouch is what makes the format work and where most of its engineering sits. It has to unfold under fill weight into a stable footprint, and it has to do that without putting load onto a seal that was not designed to carry it. Get the gusset depth wrong for the fill weight and the pouch either leans on shelf or sits with a rounded base that wastes facing height. The same decision affects how much product can be filled before the pack looks overstuffed, which is why the gusset gets settled against your actual fill weight and product density rather than picked from a size chart.

Popular Format, Predictable Failures

Because this format is so widely available, it gets bought from a size chart more often than it gets specified. The failures that follow are consistent enough to list, and all of them are cheaper to prevent than to discover after a first run has shipped.

Where Stand Up Pouches Go Wrong

Our Solutions

Pouches, and Everything They Ship Inside

Printed films and pouches, corrugated shipping cartons, folding cartons for multipacks, shelf-ready trays and displays, and labels. Because we source across categories, the pouch and the case it ships in get specified against the same count rather than by two suppliers working separately.

How a Stand Up Pouch Gets Configured

Four choices do most of the work on custom stand up pouches. Each has a cost and a consequence, and they interact more than a specification sheet suggests.

Barrier Structure

Clear, metallized or foil laminates chosen from your shelf-life claim and the product's oxygen and moisture sensitivity.

Reclosure

Press-to-close or slider zippers, positioned below the tear notch so the pack still recloses after first opening.

Features

Tear notches, hang holes, rounded corners, windows and spouts, each added against a reason rather than a catalogue.

Print Process

Digital for multiple SKUs and lower minimums, conventional where volume on a core SKU justifies the setup.

Premade Pouch or Roll Stock Changes Everything

There are two ways to end up with a filled stand up pouch, and they are different purchases. A premade pouch arrives finished and is filled on a premade pouch filler, so the specification is the pouch itself, its dimensions, its features and its tolerances. Roll stock arrives as film and the pouch is formed on your line, so the specification becomes web width, core diameter, unwind direction, repeat length and film stiffness on the forming tube. Brands sometimes ask for one and describe the other, which produces a quote that cannot be compared to anything. We establish which route the product takes, at what fill weight and target speed, and where the fill actually happens, including at a co-manufacturer with its own equipment requirements. Those numbers go to the plant before it prices the job.

Four Decisions Behind the Quote

These are the variables we settle before asking a plant for a number, because changing them afterward changes the price.

Fill Weight

The number everything follows

Fill weight drives gusset depth, gauge, seal width and whether the pouch stands loaded. It is the first question and most specification errors trace back to it being estimated rather than measured.

Barrier Target

Shelf life, not category

Barrier comes from the shelf life you have to state and the product’s actual sensitivity to oxygen, moisture and light, rather than from what a similar brand uses.

Puncture Risk

What the product does to film

Hard, sharp or abrasive product wears film from inside across shelf life. Gauge and laminate construction have to suit the most aggressive item you will run, not the average one.

SKU Count

Where print process is decided

Many SKUs at modest volume favors digital print with no plate cost. One high volume SKU favors conventional. Getting this wrong is the most common avoidable cost in a first order.

From Specification to Delivered Pouches

We specify custom stand up pouches from your product and your line rather than from a size chart, then quote through plants that can hold it.

01

Product and Line Review

We establish fill weight, product density, shelf-life claim, puncture risk, SKU count and whether you are filling premade pouches or forming from roll stock.

02

Specify and Quote

We write the structure, dimensions, features and tolerances, then price it through qualified plants and present options with the trade-offs named.

03

Produce and Deliver

We manage the run, coordinate delivery and customs brokerage across Canada and the United States, and can hold inventory for release against demand.

A pouch that stands beautifully empty and leans when filled was specified from a size chart rather than a fill weight.

Sourced, Not Sold From a Single Press

We are a sourcing and brokerage partner. We buy from our manufacturing partners and sell to you, so the recommendation follows your product rather than the capacity of one plant.

Format Neutral Advice

If your product would run better as roll stock or a lay flat pouch, we say so, because we have no press standing idle waiting for the order.

Pouch Through to Pallet

The pouch, the shipper and the retail tray sourced together, so the case count reconciles before any tooling is committed.

Qualified Alternatives

More than one vetted plant in the formats we supply most, which matters when a launch date is fixed and press capacity is not.

Consultative Review

We understand the product and the business before proposing a structure, so the specification covers the range you are building rather than one order.

Which Categories This Format Actually Suits

This format earns its place where the product is multi-serve, needs reclosing, and benefits from standing with a full front panel facing the customer. That covers a great deal of snack packaging, most roasted coffee at retail sizes, granola, dried fruit, nuts, powders and pet treats. It suits those categories less well at very light single-serve weights, where a lay flat pouch costs less and performs the same job, and less well again at very heavy bulk weights where the seal loading starts to dominate the design. Brands often run both, a stand up pouch at retail size and a lay flat or roll stock format for single serve, which is straightforward when both come from the same specification review rather than two unconnected suppliers. Where the product also needs a carton or a display, that sits inside the same program.

Custom Stand Up Pouch Questions

What information do you need to quote custom stand up pouches?

Fill weight and product density first, because those drive gusset depth, gauge and seal width. Then the shelf life you need to state and what the product is sensitive to, which sets the barrier. Then whether the product is hard, sharp or abrasive, which affects gauge and laminate. Then your SKU count and annual volume, which decides digital or conventional print. Finally, whether you are filling premade pouches or forming from roll stock, and on what equipment. With those answers a quote is comparable. Without them, any number is provisional.

We source them. Armour Rose purchases custom packaging consumables from manufacturing partners and sells them to customers. The practical difference is that we are choosing between qualified suppliers rather than between our own capabilities. A converter with a pouch line will recommend a pouch, because that is the only answer available. If your product would be cheaper and more reliable as roll stock formed on your own line, there is no cost to us in telling you that.

It depends on the zipper type and on what the product does to it, which is why the question is worth asking before ordering. Press-to-close zippers are the standard and perform well on clean, larger product. Fine powders and product with a lot of fines are the problem, because material lodges in the zipper track and the reclose degrades quickly. Slider zippers cost more and tolerate that better. Position matters as much as type, since a tear notch placed above the zipper means the customer removes the reclosure the first time they open the pack.

It comes down to SKU count against volume per SKU. Digital carries no plate cost and lower minimums, so it suits brands running several flavors, seasonal variants or a launch where volumes are uncertain. Conventional print costs more to set up and rewards long runs on a stable design, so it suits a core SKU at real volume. Many programs use both, digital on the tail and conventional on the lead item. We work this out against your actual volumes rather than applying a rule, because the wrong choice here is one of the more expensive mistakes on a first order.

We are careful here because the category is often oversold. The realistic option on flexible film today is material containing a percentage of post-consumer recycled content, and whether that works depends on the barrier your product needs, since higher barrier requirements and recycled content can pull against each other. Where it is feasible we will specify it. What we will not do is repeat compostable or recyclable claims we cannot see documentation for, because a retail buyer or a quality team will eventually ask for that paperwork and it needs to exist.

Yes, and that is usually where the value shows. We source corrugated shipping cartons, folding cartons for multipacks, shelf-ready trays and retail displays alongside the film. The common failure in a multi-vendor setup is that the pouch supplier sizes the pouch, the corrugated supplier sizes the case, and nobody owns the number connecting them, which is how brands end up with displays that do not fit their cases. Running both through one program means the count is agreed once and applied everywhere.
